Most modern camera sensors can be separated into two categories: CCD and CMOS. While CCD is more common of the two (used mostly in surveillance systems and other industrial devices), almost all consumer cameras, including the one on your smartphone, utilizes a CMOS sensor. CCD sensors allow for all its pixels to process at the same time, CMOS utilizes a top-to-bottom “scanning” protocol for a more detailed image. However, this method introduces a series of problems, one of which is called “Rolling Shutter”, where the image becomes warped when subjugated to intense movement. The mechanism of an actual scanner utilizes the exact same principle. By applying certain motions to an object, the original purpose of the scanner is lost, and can be viewed as a new artist tool. Many photographers of today have also embraced the “Rolling Shutting” effect. The outcome now redefines the standards of photography.
